GREATER CLEVELAND FISHER HOUSE HITS $3 MILLION CAMPAIGN GOAL!

CLEVELAND, Oh: “We did it!” Those are the words of Tom Sweeney, the Board President for The Greater Cleveland Fisher House (GCFH), in announcing that the GCFH capital campaign has reached its fundraising goal of $3 million as of July 15 th . “It’s been a long and interesting journey,” said Sweeney, a Vietnam veteran and former WKYC TV3 anchorman, “but we are there due to the support and generosity of from some of the area’s largest corporations, hundreds of mid-sized businesses, individual donors, and of course the Northeast Ohio military and veterans community.” Sweeney said the $3 million goal was reached as the result of three large contributions which all arrived simultaneously within a week’s period. Those donations included the Cleveland Foundation, the PNC Charitable Trust/Edwin D. Northrup II Fund, The Catherine L. & Edward A. Lozick Foundation, and a donation of $28,800.00 from Susan and Bob Conkey of Amherst, Ohio, who held a private fundraising event at their home. “These four donations are reflection of the diversity of support this initiative has received all along,” said Sweeney. As part of a new design concept, the Greater Cleveland Fisher House will actually be two homes with 12 – 14 suites and will accommodate up to 50 family members. The houses […]

Fisher House Foundation Receives 4-Star Rating Under New Rating System

June 3, 2016, Fisher House Foundation Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator, recently implemented an updated and enhanced financial rating system, and Fisher House Foundation not only retained its 4-star rating for the 12th year in a row, it’s overall score went from 96.87 to 99.37 out of 100. “The Foundation’s coveted 4-star rating puts it in a very select group of high-performing charities,” said Michael Thatcher, President and CEO, Charity Navigator.  “Out of the thousands of nonprofits Charity Navigator evaluates, only one in four earn 4 stars—a rating that demands rigor, responsibility and commitment to openness.  Fisher House supporters should feel confident that their hard-earned dollars ae being used efficiently and responsibly.” Since 2002, using objective, data-driven analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology.  These “Accountability & Transparency” metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities have “best practices” that minimize the chance of unethical activities and whether they freely share basic information about their organization with their donors and other stakeholders. “Fisher […]

A touching, personal story about survival by Amanda Gilliam – “To me and my family in that moment, it meant the world.”

Story by guest blogger Amanda Gilliam. On August 13, 2014 my husband became a statistic. He was one of the 22 a day who lost his fight with the invisible wounds of war. Rapidly shuffled out of the home we shared on base, I looked back to see eerie caution tape surrounding this once vibrant house. After being rushed to the hospital with his commanding officer and fellow soldiers, we waited and prayed. Unfortunately, it was time to say good-bye. His family was on their way from Tennessee and were about 2 hours out. My life had stopped but the world blurred around me. I had the outfit I wore (pajamas), no toiletries, no medications, not even my ID card. Army protocol and regulation stated I couldn’t enter my home until the investigation was complete. I didn’t have anywhere to go and just the shirt on my back. On top of loosing my husband, my life, I couldn’t even go home nor did I ever want to face that house. The Fisher House took me and my family in without hesitation. The moment I entered I felt welcomed and safe. It’s not made like a hotel to be simple […]
