#GivingTuesday at GCFH

WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY? We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.   Please donate to the Greater Cleveland Fisher House in support of #GivingTuesday by using the form below.

HBA Smart Home Tour Raises Money for Cleveland Fisher House Construction

Consumers who are thinking about building a new home or remodeling an existing one can get a first-hand glimpse of the latest technologies for making their life easier and their homes greener – and do so while giving back to veterans and their families. This year the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Cleveland is donating tickets sales for its annual Smart HomeTour toward the construction of a Fisher House, a“Ronald McDonald House” property to be built adjacent to the grounds of the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland, said HBA ExecutiveDirector Brenda Callaghan. When complete, family members of hospital patients will be able to relax comfortably and free of charge in one of the 16,500-square-foot home’s 18 suites. HBA hopes to help Fisher House organizers close the gap on raising $3 million before groundbreaking on Veterans Day. Approximately $2.8 million has been raised to date. “We are asking consumers to come out and help us support the Fisher House while they take part in the educational tour,”Callaghan said. Step Inside The nine new homes on the 2015 HBA Smart HomeTour encompass a variety of features that fall into three categories–green building, energy efficiency and home technology, according to […]

Suicide Prevention: How 1 Person Can Make a Difference

On World Suicide Prevention Day learn the warning signs. If you are military or a Veteran and you need help call 800-273-TALK or text 838255. One person can make a difference. Thoughts of suicide are not necessarily something people explicitly announce to the world, which means loved ones often have no idea that their friend or family member is contemplating it. But there are signs and risk factors, and while you might be thinking you can’t make a difference by yourself, you’re wrong. Experts say that’s sometimes all it takes. That’s the point of the Power of 1 Campaign, launched by the Defense Department and Department of Veterans Affairs in observance of National Suicide Prevention Month. “One smile, one conversation, one comment, one caring gesture toward somebody at risk can make a difference in their experience and perhaps instill hope and get them to help,” said Dr. Keita Franklin, the director of the Defense Suicide Prevention Office. The No. 1 thing to know: Suicide is preventable. Warning signs are just missed sometimes. “Inevitably, we always know that somebody has told somebody that they were struggling,” Franklin said of her office’s research. “Unfortunately, that person may not have known the extent […]
